Occupation of the site of Worcester can be dated back to Neolithic times, a village having been founded on the eastern bank of the River Severn her in around 400 BC. Worcester itself was founded by the Romans in 50 AD to establish a fort on the Roman road from Wroxeter to Gloucester. After the Romans left Britain in 407AD, it is thought that Worcester was probably abandoned. By the mid 7th century the Saxons started a new settlement and in 680AD Worcester was given a bishop and a cathedral, the city now grew very rapidly.
By late medieval times the population had grown to around 10,000 as the manufacture of cloth started to become a large local industry. Worcester was the site of the Battle of Worcester in 1651 when Charles II’s attempt to regain the crown by force was defeated. The Royal Worcester Porcelain Company factory was founded by Dr John Wall in 1751. During World War II, the Worcester was chosen to be the seat of an evacuated government in case of mass German invasion. The War Cabinet, would have moved to Hindlip Hall, 3 miles north of Worcester.
Worcesters compact city centre is largely pedestrianised and offers more than 100 places to eat and drink, from top-flight restaurants, traditional cafes, ancient pubs or modern coffee shops. There are three main shopping centres in Worcester, being CrownGate, Cathedral Plaza and Reindeer Court. CrownGate is the largest and is split in to two centres. The M5 motorway runs north-south to the east of Worcester, and is accessed by Junction 6 & 7. This makes Worcester relatively easily accessible by car to most parts of the country. The A449 runs south-west to Malvern and north to Kidderminster. The A44 runs between Evesham and wet to Leominster and Aberystwyth.
The A38 runs south to Tewkesbury and Gloucester and north to Droitwich and Birmingham. The A422 heads east to Alcester. Worcester has two railway stations, Worcester Foregate Steet and Worcester Shrub Hill. Both stations frequently serve Birmingham, London and nearby towns and cities. Worcester’s nearest major airport is Birmingham International approximately 45 minutes by road via the M5 and M42 motorways.
Probably the most famous landmark in Worcester is its cathedral. The current building was begun in 1084 while its crypt dates from the 10th Century. There are three main parks in Worcester; Cripplegate Park, Gheluvelt Park and Fort Royal Park which is one of the sites of the English Civil War.
