Swindon originally started off as a Saxon settlement sat in a defensible position on a limestone hill. For centuries Swindon was a just a small and quiet market town until the Industrial Revolution in the 1800’s. It started with the construction of the Wiltshire and Berkshire canal in 1810 and the North Wiltshire canal in 1819 which brought more trade into the area. It was the coming of the railway, which transformed Swindon for a small market town into the largest town in Wiltshire. In 1840 Isambard Kingdon Brunel chose Swindon as the site for the railworks he planned for the Great Western Railway linking London with Bristol. Swindon was the junction for the proposed line to Gloucester. In the last years of the 19th century Swindon continued to grow rapidly.
The Old Town, the original market town merged with Swindon New Town which had grown around the railway line. During the first half of the 20th century the railway works was Swindon’s largest employer and one of the biggest in the county employing 14,500 workers. The works’ decline started in 1960 and by the 1970s much of the works closed. In 2001 construction commenced on Priory Vale, the third and final instalment in Swindon’s “Northern Expansion” project which began with Abbey Meads and continued at St Andrew’s Ridge. The New Swindon Company was formed in 2002, to stimulate investment and co-ordinate plans for the revitalisation of the town centre. The average household income in Swindon is amongst the highest in the country and with a population of 180,000 is one of the fastest growing towns in Europe.
The Brunel Centre and the Parade are shopping areas in the town centre, built along the line of the filled-in Wilts and Berks Canal. McArthur Glen Designer Outlet is an outdoor shopping mall for reduced goods (mainly clothing), using the buildings of the disused railway engine works. Retail parks include Greenbridge, West Swindon Shopping Centre, Stratton and the Orbital Shopping Centre. Swindon has many public parks including Lydiard Coutry Park, Stanton Park, Barbury Castle, Queens Park, Town Gardens and Coate Water. Shaw Community Forest is being developed on the site of a landfill site in West Swindon. Swindon has a live music scene with venues such as The Beehive, The 12 Bar and The Victoria which attract local acts as well as touring national acts.
The Oasis Leisure Centre and the County Ground are used for some of the more major events. The Arts Centre, located in Old Town, is a 212 seater theatre which features all types of music, professional and amateur theatre, nationally-recognised comedians, films and children’s events. The Wyvern Theatre features events in areas such as film, music and comedy. Swindon has two leisure centre, The Link Centre and the Oasis, Broome Manor Golf Complex is a golf course set against the backdrop of Marlborough Downs. Swindon Town FC play at the County Ground near Swindon Town centre. Swindon Robins compete in the speedway Elite League at the Abbey Stadium, Blunsdon. Foxhill is an internationally renowned motocross circuit six mile south east of the town.
Swindon has two sixth-form colleges, 53 primary schools and 11 secondary schools. Schools with specialist status include Saint Joseph’s Catholic Business & Enterprise College, Commonwealth School, Greendown Community School, Nova Hreod, Dorcan Technology College, Kingsdown School, Isambard Community School and Swindon Academy.
Swindon is located just north of the M4 motorway running from London to West Wales with two juctions (15 and 16). Swindon Railway Station is located on the mainline between Bristol and London.
