Quedgeley is likely to have originated as a roadside settlement, the main settlement has been strung out along the Bristol Road, including most of the older surviving houses which date from the 16th century or earlier.
The Little Thatch Hotel has an intriguing history and was originally built in 1351 making it one of the oldest buildings in Gloucestershire. It is believed that in 1535 King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed here on their way to visit the Fleet in Bristol.
The population increased slowly until the 1960s when a large amount of land in the parish was designated for building. The suburb of Gloucester now has a population of 11,800 which includes the new residential development at Kingsway (the site of the former RAF Quedgeley) along with Tuffley.
RAF Quedgeley was first occupied in 1914, at one point 6364 people were employed by the site, mainly women. Originally RAF Quedgeley supplied ammunition during the First World War. In World War II RAF Quedgeley was used as a storage and maintenance site for aircraft equipment and motor vehicles. It continued in this logistics role until its closure in 1995.
The day to day amenities in Quedgeley have grown over the years with two main shopping centres. The Severn Vale shopping centre is home to a Tesco supermarket and a variety of adjoining stores including a post office and bank. More recently Quedgeley District Centre has opened with major brands such as Matalan, Next and Brantano.
Quedgeley has five schools within the parish: Fieldcourt Infant School, Fieldcourt Junior School, Beechwood Green School, Meadowside Primary School and Severn Vale School.
Quedgeley is conveniently situated on the A38 and near Junction 12 of the M5 motorway running between Birmingham and Bristol.
