The history of Gloucester

The City of Gloucester stands on the site of a Roman fortress dating from AD48 known as Glevum.  The Saxons captured the city in 577 following the battle of Dyrham.  Gloucester derives from the Anglo Saxon for fort, it’s situation on a navigable river and the foundation in 681 of the Abbey of St Peter by Æthelred favoured the growth of the town.  The importance of the city was conformed by Henry 1st in 1155 by the granting of a charter giving the city privileges equal to those of London. In the Middle Ages the main export was wool which came from the Cotswolds and was processed in Gloucester; other exports included leather and iron (tools and weapons).  Gloucester also had a large fishing industry at that time.

Throughout the English Civil War Gloucester stood for Parliament against the King.  In 1643 the issue cam to a head when King Charles I demanded the surrender of the city, following his capture in Bristol.  For almost a month an army of 35,000 men camped outside the city, which was defefended by no more than 1500 soldiers.  In the opinion of most of the contemporary writers Gloucester was the turning point of the English Civil War. During the 2nd world war Gloucester was famous for it’s aircraft and the development of the jet engine by Mr Frank Whittle.

The 2001 Census recorded Gloucester’s population as 109,885.  The city’s main industries are primarily service industries, as well as finance and business sector, and, more traditionally, the aerospace industry.

Gloucester amenities

The city centre contains many shops within its central pedestrianised area, and three dedicated shopping centres. The Kings Walk shopping centre includes many high street names.  The Mall, located primarily alongside Eastgate Street boasts several small independent shops as well as larger chains.  Attached to the Mall is the still functioning indoor market opened in the late 1960s.  Gloucester Quays Outlet Centre, within easy walking distance of the city centre, opened in May 2009 selling brand names at a reduced price.

With regards to sport and leisure in the city; Kingsholm Stadium is the home of Gloucester Rugby, one of the world’s top rugby union clubs, GL1 (previously Gloucester Leisure Centre) was redeveloped in 2003 and features 4 swimming pools, a multi use sports hall, indoor bowls room, squash courts, gym and health spa.

Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre is one of the best and longest artificial ski slopes in the country.  Bentham Domes on the outskirts of the city boast one of the largest 5-a-side leagues in Europe.

Gloucester schools

There are three endowed schools in Gloucester: The King’s School, re-founded by Henry VIII of England as part of the cathedral establishment; the school of St Mary de Crypt now known as “The Crypt School, Gloucester” and Sir Thomas Rich’s Blue Coat Hospital for boys in Longlevens. The ”High School for Girls” also known as ”Denmark Road” and Ribston Hall High School for girls. Comprehensives include Brockworth Enterprise School, Beaufort Community School in Tuffley, St Peter’s High School (Catholic school), Chosen Hill School, Severn Vale School, Central Technology College, Barnwood Park Arts College and Churchdown School Arts College.

Gloucester transport

The City of Gloucester is roughly 30 miles north of Bristol and just over 40 miles south of Birmingham.  by road, Gloucester is accessible most significantly via the M5 motorway (running east of the city), whilst the A38 connects the city to Bristol and Tewkesbury.  Furthermore, the A40 (running east to west) and the A46 link Gloucester to Cheltenham and the Forest of Dean, and to Stroud, respectively.  Gloucester also connects to Cirencester and Ledbury via the A417.

Offering noteworthy transport routes for the city, canals link Gloucester to the Severn Estuary, Hereford and Ledbury.  Certain river craft also use the River Severn to connect  the city to the River Avon.  Gloucester railway station offers rail connections to various locations in the county.

Gloucester places of interest

Gloucester is a multicultural city that combines historic architecture with a unique blend of visitor attractions.  The two main city attractions are undoubtedly Gloucester Cathedral and Historic Gloucester Docks.  Many medieval, Tudor period and half timbered houses survive from earlier periods of Gloucester’s history, one of the most impressive is the New Inn in Northgate Street.  The surrounding countryside is some of the best in the UK with the Cotswold Hills to the east and Forest of Dean to the west.
