Droitwich History

The village of Salinae was located at the crossroads of several Roman Roads. The town is situated on massive deposits of salt, and salt has been extracted there since ancient times. Anglo Saxon charters refer to the town as Saltwich and confirm the presence of salt making furnaces near to the River Salwarpe. Salt was extracted by pumping up saturated brine from the salt deposits, and evaporating the brine. In the 19th century Droitwich became famous as a spa town. Unlike other places, the medicinal benefits were not derived from drinking the spa water, which is almost saturated brine, but from muscular relief derived by swimming and floating in such a dense, concentrated salt solution, at the town’s brine baths. Droitwich remained throughout the medieval period as the only specialist industrial centre in the West Midlands. Droitwich remained a fairly small town until the 1960’s, when the population was barely 7,000; however, it has grown considerably since due to overspill from Birmingham with many housing estates being developed in the 1970s and 1980s

Shopping in Droitwich is mostly focused around Victoria Squire which is the traditional town centre, leading down to the Slater’s shopping centre and down to the original High Street, with its mix of traditional shops and local pubs. Droitwich is situated close to Junction 5 of the M5 Motorway between Birmingham and Worcester. The A38 also runs through the town. The railway station is situated just outside of the town centre with trains to Birmingham, Worcester, Kidderminster and Stourbridge.
