The historic market town of Cinderford is located in Gloucestershire with a population of 8,116 people (UK census 2001). The town lies on the eastern fringes of the Forest of Dean. It grew where the Littledean to Coleford road crossed Bideford Brook. Cinderford only really came into existence in the 19th Century due to the rapid expansion of the local coal mines. The layout and architecture of Cinderford is similar to that found in many of the Welsh Valley towns, which also expanded with the growth of coal mining. In addition, heavy industry has had a major influence on the way that the town has developed. As in many other industrial area, the manufacturing businesses are sited on the flat valley floor, while the housing is developed on the valley sides, using sites that were less practical for large scale industrial processes. When the mines here closed in the 1950s, Cinderford suffered worse than Coleford, the other main town of the Forest, because it had few other industries to fall back on. Now, however, there is increasing commercial and industrial development in the town, with several thriving business parks catering for national and international companies.
Cinderford itself is one of the main commercial centres of the Forest of Dean, and offers an excellent variety of shops, as well as a thriving open air market. There are also many local pubs, cafes, restaurants, covering everything from Indian and Chinese to traditional English food , as well as locally brewed beers from the freeminers brewery. The town is virtually surrounded by forest, so residents and visitors are ideally placed to take advantage of many acres of beautiful woodland.
Cinderford has three primary schools, St. White’s Primary School based on St Whites Road, and Forest View Primary School based on Latimer Road. Also the private junior school of St Anthony’s. Cinderford has a single, relatively small secondary school on Causeway Road, called Heywood Community School. The school offers education to GCSE level, but Further Education at A-Level or equivalent is not offered.
Cinderford’s High Street and Belle Vue Road lie on the A4151, which links with the A48 (Gloucester to Chepstow road) to the east. Cinderford is served by a regular bus service to Gloucester and Coleford. The closest airports are in Staverton (between Gloucester and Cheltenham) and in Bristol.
The town and its surrounding area offer a great variety of things to see and do. The Dean Heritage Centre is dedicated to preserving the history of the Forest of Dean. For the more energetic there is the three mile long Sculpture Trail through the Forest. The trail begins and ends at Beechenhurst, a picturesque picnic site.
