Cannock is an old coal mining town steeped in industrial history. The town was small until coal mining increased heavily during the mid to late nineteenth century. After the Second World War the town’s population again increased and has kept on increasing ever since as many new residential developments are built as commuting areas for Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Stafford. Cannock’s population currently stands at around 60,000 inhabitants. It is the fifth largest settlement in Staffordshire behind Stoke on Trent, Tamworth, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Stafford, but ahead of Burton-on-Trent.
Cannock is part of the largest urban area of Cannock Chase District which includes the villages and towns of Cannock, Hednesford, Heath Hayes, and Rawnsley. Similarly to the national trend, Cannock’s housing is increasingly of a post-Fordist era style, although various other periods of architecture are sited around the town. Many homes are still owned by the council, but there is now an active policy of replacing old, unattractive, post-war housing with newer, more energy efficient - and more affordable - homes.
Vast improvements in shopping, leisure and housing are in the pipeline and are set to create a prosperous new era for the town. The area offers great potential for business and a great future for residents.
Cannock has a reasonably sized town centre which includes some well known high street names. It also has outdoor and indoor markets and a shopping centre. The town has two significant nightclubs and a variety of pubs and restaurants. Cannock has a swimming pool and leisure centre. It also has a small ice rink and a municipal golf course which is open to everyone.
Cannock lies to the north of the West Midlands conurbation on the M6, brand new M6 Toll, A34 and A5 Watling Street, providing east-west and north-south routes. Cannock is served by a railway station on the Chase Line and is typically served by one train per hour in each direction between Birmingham New Street and Stafford. At peak times there are also trains to Hednesford and Rugeley. The district is well served bu bus amd express coach companies operating from Cannock bus station.
Birmingham International Airport is only 30-40 minutes away by motorway, Manchester Airport is 75 minutes away via the M6/M56 and East Midlands Airport is also easily accessible.
Cannock Park is located adjacent to the town centre, providing an easily accessible retreat for locals. Magnificent Cannock Chase is right on the town’s doorstep - this is the smallest mainland Area of Natural Beauty (AONB) in England and Wales, covering approx 26 square miles. Cannock Chase has a wide variety of wildlife, a good range of outdoor activities, plenty of scenic walks, and several visitor centres. It is also home to German and Commonwealth war cemeteries.
