History of Aldridge

Aldridge was recorded as a settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Alrewic which may have originated from an abundance of Alder trees in the area.  Aldridge began as a small agricultural settlement.  In the 1800s, Aldridge became an industrial town with coal mine and lime kilns.  The clay extracted in Aldridge is particularly suited to the manufacture of blue bricks.  Farms, however continued to dominate the eastern part of the area.  The development of these industries initially saw the construction of canals and later railways into the area.

The population expanded as people moved into Aldridge to work in industry. The 1960’s saw the evolution of the “The Village”, as residents call Aldridge, into a town.  Modern shops and council buildings were built in the centre of Aldridge.  After the Second World War Aldridge became a suburb of Birmingham with large housing estates being built at Redhouse, Druids Heath, Leighswood and Coppy Hall. Today Aldridge is a relatively affluent area of Walsall that consists of mostly upmarket private homes that have been built since the 1920.
